They are two of the most popular personality typing systems! But what are the most common Enneagram types for each Myers-Briggs type?
If you’ve been in the personality world long enough you have probably heard of both the Enneagram and Myers-Briggs.
Both are two very popular personality typing systems and both help people understand themselves and others better.
If you aren’t familiar with the Enneagram and/or Myers-Briggs then allow me to break it down for you.
What is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram is a personality typing system that shows us the nine ways that people in the world default to in order to live their life.
Enneagram Types:
Type 1 | Type 2 | Type 3 | Type 4 | Type 5 | Type 6 | Type 7| Type 8 | Type 9
The Enneagram explains the why of all that we do, think, and feel. The motivation behind everything that we do.
These nine types are based on our core motivationsand when we delve into the Enneagram we can better understand ourselves and begin to grow.
Typing others is not possible because Enneagram type is based on internal motivation.
What is Myers-Briggs?
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality typing system that has 16 personality types based on how you perceive information and how you make decisions.
Myers-Briggs Types:
ENFJ | ENFP | ENTJ | ENTP | ESFJ | ESFP | ESTJ | ESTP
INFJ | INFP | INTJ | INTP | ISFJ | ISFP | ISTJ | ISTP
Myers-Briggs explains the how of all that we do, think, feel.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has long been believed to be pretty straight forward by the masses. You are either one of 4 sets of letters (Extrovert/Introvert, iNtuitive/Sensing, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving).
But I’ll let you know that there is actually much more nuance and depth to the MBTI than just those 8 letters…. just like there is much more nuance and depth to the Enneagram than just the 9 types.
Typing others is possible as the MBTI is much more trait evident based.
Whether you use one or both of these great personality typing systems, you’ll want to do your due diligence and really dig deeply into them in order to get the full benefits they offer!
If you are curios to learn more about these two personality systems and if one is better than the other, I recommend checking out my post: Enneagram vs Myers-Briggs.
Enneagram and Myers-Briggs Correlation
Is there a correlation between the Enneagram and Myers-Briggs?
If you get enough personality nerds together, you’ll start noticing that certain Myers-Briggs (MBTI) types seem more common for certain Enneagram types.
For example, It’s very common to find other ISTJs like me in the Enneagram 1 group.
So yes, there are certain Myers-Briggs types which are more common for certain Enneagram types….
Is there a one to one correlation between these two systems?
Are all ISTJs Type 1s? Are all Type 4s INFJs?
No!
While there are definitely certain MBTI types that are more likely to be found in certain Enneagram types, there is no one to one correlation.
In fact, any Myers-Briggs type can be any Enneagram type! Although some pairings are definitely very rare.
There have been many polls done in order to find the correlation between these two typing systems and I decided to do one of my own.
Poll Disclosures:
Every personality poll every done is hardly accurate as there is such a very high mistyping potential.
Each personality poll is also prone to have a pool that is prone to whoever is taking the poll. (For example, I’m fully aware that my response pool is heavier on certain types and ages who are on Instagram as well as certain types and ages that actually respond to personality polls in general.)
Also note: for my poll you will notice that some types are listed as 0% for certain types. This does NOT mean that it is impossible to be that type pairing. It simply means that particular pairing didn’t respond to my poll. 0% does not equal impossible although it does suggest that it is highly uncommon.
As I said, no personality poll is perfect and thus all should be taken with a grain of salt as they are all just a small snapshot of what is reality.
A few poll facts:
Over 2,500 people participated in this poll. Perceivers (namely ISTP and ESTP) types participated the least in this poll. INFJ and INFP participated in the poll the most with many Judging types coming in close behind. Enneagram types all participated about equally with types 7 and 8 a little less so)
The Most Common Enneagram types for Each Myers-Briggs Type Poll Results
Below, you will find my Enneagram Types by Myers-Briggs poll results from over 2500 participants.
First, I will show you the results of how common each Enneagram type is for each Myers-Briggs type. And after all nine types, I’ve provided a chart that shows how common each type is all in one lovely graph.
As you can see, ENFJs are most commonly Type 2s, with Type 1, 3, and 8 also being fairly common. You’ll also notice that the poll results showed zero ENFJs are a Type 5, however this doesn’t mean that an ENFJ can’t be a 5; simply that none responded to the poll.
You’ll notice that ENFPs are very often Type 7s but Type 2 is also a common possibility. We once again see that it is very uncommon for an ENFP to be a Type 5 this probably due to the Extravert and Feeling aspects of MBTI types not usually matching a Type 5.
As you can see, ENTJs are very commonly Type 8s, with Type 1 and 3 also being fairly common. You’ll also notice that the poll results showed zero ENTJs are a Type 9, however this doesn’t mean that an ENTJ can’t be a 9; simply that none responded to the poll.
You’ll notice that ENTPs are very often Type 7s but Types 3 and 8 are also a common possibility. We see that it is very uncommon for an ENTP to be a Type 9 and almost as uncommon for a ENTP to be a 1.
As you can see, ESFJs are most commonly Type 2s, with Type 1, 3, and 6 also being fairly common. You’ll also notice that the poll results showed zero ESFJs are a Type 5 (and Type 4 is almost at zero percent as well), however this doesn’t mean that an ESFJ can’t be a 5 or 4; simply that none responded to the poll.
You’ll notice that ESFPs are very often Type 7s but Type 2 and 3 are also common possibilities. We once again see that no ESFPs responded as a Type 5 this probably due to the Extravert and Feeling aspects of MBTI types not usually matching a Type 5.
As you can see, ESTJs are most commonly Type 3s, with Type 1 and 8 also being very close behind. You’ll also notice that the poll results showed very low percentages of ESTJs are Types 2, 4, and 5.
You’ll notice that ESTPs are very often Type 8s but Type 7 is also common possibilities. We also see that no ESTPs responded as a Type 2 or 4 this probably due to the Sensing and Thinking aspects of MBTI types not usually matching the actions of these types. However this doesn’t mean that an ESTP can’t be a 2 or 4; simply that none responded to the poll.
As you can see, INFJs are most commonly Type 4 and 9, with Type 1 also being fairly common. You’ll also notice that the poll results showed fairly low percentages of INFJs as Type 3 and 7 probably largely due to the Introvert aspect.
You’ll notice that INFPs are very often Type 4s or 9s. Again we see that INFPs rarely responded as a Type 3 or 7 this probably largely due to the Introvert aspect.
As you can see, INTJs are most commonly Type 5s, with Type 1 and 8 also being very close behind. Type 8s being common amongst INTJ was an interesting result as older surveys done by other people usually showed that 8s were rarely introverts. I think this shift is largely due to the fact that people are realizing that Enneagram type is determined by motivation and not traits. You’ll also notice that the poll results showed very low percentages of INTJs are Types 2, 7, and 9.
You’ll notice that INTPs are very often Type 5s. We also see that no INTPs responded as a Type 2 this probably due to the Thinking aspects of MBTI types not usually matching this heart triad type. However this doesn’t mean that an INTP can’t be a 2; simply that none responded to the poll.
As you can see, ISFJs are most commonly Type 9s, with Type 1 and 6 also being very close behind. You’ll also notice that the poll results show that no ISFJs responded as a Type 7 this probably due to the Introvert and Feeling aspects of MBTI types not usually matching this head triad type. However this doesn’t mean that an ISFJ can’t be a 7; simply that none responded to the poll.
You’ll notice that ISFPs are very often Type 9s. We also see that no ISFPs responded as a Type 1 this probably due to the Perceiving aspects of MBTI types not usually matching this usually very structured type. However this doesn’t mean that an ISFP can’t be a 1; simply that none responded to the poll.
As you can see, ISTJs are most commonly Type 1s, with Type 5 and 6 being also fairly common. You’ll also notice that the poll results show that no ISTJs responded as a Type 7 this probably due to the Introvert and Sensing aspects of MBTI types not usually matching this more spontaneous type. However this doesn’t mean that an ISTJ can’t be a 7; simply that none responded to the poll.
You’ll notice that ISTPs are very often Type 8s with Type 5 also being a common possibility. We see that no ISTPs responded as a Type 2 or 4 this probably due to the Sensing and Thinking aspects of MBTI types not usually matching these two heart triad types. However this doesn’t mean that an ISTP can’t be a 2 or 4; simply that none responded to the poll.
The Most Common Enneagram Types for Each Myers-Briggs Type
As promised here is one handy chart showing how common all type pairings!
Please note that this chart should be read by finding the MBTI type first and seeing which Enneagram type is common/uncommon. It does not work as well if you find the Enneagram type first.
